Make Your Fonts Variable. Upgrading Existing Font Projects to OpenType Variations

Thousands of font sources exist today which were designed in FontLab Studio, Glyphs, RoboFont with Superpolator, FontForge or the upcoming FontLab VI. This makes it relatively easy for type designers to re-release them as variable OpenType fonts. The OpenType Variations model is conceptually and technically similar to pre-existing technologies (TrueType GX, MutatorMath and MultipleMaster), but there are some important differences in detail. Adam will talk about those differences and will give tips on how to approach the conversion of font sources into variable TTFs and OTFs using a variety of available tools, both open-source and proprietary. Let’s do some font hacking!

About Twardoch
Adam Twardoch is director of products at FontLab, glyph wrangler at MyFonts, and a consultant specializing in multilingual font technology, webfonts, Unicode and OpenType. Adam co-designed several typefaces, including Lato by Łukasz Dziedzic and Milka by Botio Nikoltchev. He teaches type and font technology at the AKT typography course at Wyszyński University in Warsaw, and at conferences and universities worldwide. Adam has contributed to the OpenType Variations and W3C CSS Fonts specifications and co-edited Polish editions of several typography books. He has served as board member of several typography non-profits (ATypI, GUST). He lives in Berlin (Germany) and Gdańsk (Poland).
