ISType 2017 •Variation

Typefaces behave differently in various conditions, and these circumstances provoke a wide spectrum of variation in their appearance and function. The inherent nature of “letter–making” lies in the subtleties of “form-making,” an exploratory creative process that generates new shapes with the purpose of forming a coherent system. We might then ask how different circumstances—of all sorts and scales—inspire variations to take shape in the production of typefaces.

In 2017, ISType is meeting under the theme of Variation. With the goal of providing an international gathering at which students, professionals and enthusiasts can share their ideas and inspire each other, ISType 2017 invites you to explore the subtleties that lie beneath type production. The theme Variation will revolve around the many interactions between practice, theory and history within the field of typography.
