An interactive presentation based on a series of typographic experiments exploring Variable Font design spaces through the use of physical controllers. The talk will highlight how the combination of two relatively new technologies – OpenType Font Variations and Web MIDI – allows for new means of interactivity, control, and expression. The experiments will showcase two different types of hardware, Korg nanoKontrol2 control surface and Leap Motion hand motion sensor, each producing contrasting interactive properties.
Gor Jihanian is an independent type designer fascinated by the synthesis of tradition and technology. He holds an MA in Typeface Design from the University of Reading, where he began his active engagement in the research and development of Armenian typefaces. Enjoying working on both original and existing designs – Gor’s recent projects include publishing «Spindle» on the Future Fonts platform, and collaborating with David Jonathan Ross on «Fit Armenian», an expansion on the variable font, «Fit». Gor is passionate about sharing his script expertise through Type Consultation and Education, previously conducting a series of type design workshops at the Tumo Center in Yerevan. When not buried in books or Béziers, Gor is exploring new possibilities of Font Variations technology.
